The Children's Hospital HIV Program (CHIP) is committed to caring for infants, children, youth and pregnant women with HIV infection in a comprehensive, family-centered supportive manner. Care is also provided to infants exposed to HIV and to parents of HIV-infected children who would like to receive their care along with their children. |

Why does Border to Border focus on children with HIV / AIDS?
Because they are the ones who need the most help. Unfortunately, they also have the fewest resources and the weakest voice. Without your help, the statistics will only become more frightening.
HIV/AIDS is a "disease of young people
| |
The Center for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that there are over 11,000 children less than 13 years of age diagnosed with HIV/AIDS in the United States, with 90% of these cases resulting from mother-to-infant transmission. Despite advance in the prevention of transmission to infants, a newborn was infected with HIV every day in 2000. Due to lack of research and funding treatment options are more limited for children. |
| |
The vast majority of the families affected by HIV/AIDS live under the poverty line. Modern drug therapy costs over $1000 per month per child.
|
| |
Nine out of ten HIV individuals are unaware they are infected.
|
| |
Every minute, 6 young people between the age of 10 - 25 are infected with HIV. |
| |
By race, 54 percent of the new infections in the United States occur among African Americans, and 64 percent of the new infections in women occur in African American women. |
| |
75 percent of the new infections in women are heterosexually transmitted. |
| |
Women, especially women of color, are one of the highest-risk populations for contracting HIV. The Center for Disease control states African American and Hispanic women together represent less than one-fourth of all U.S. women, yet they account for more than three-fourths (78%) of AIDS cases reported to date among women in the U.S. |
| |
HIV/AIDS was the 5th leading cause of death for U.S. women aged 25-44.
|

How can we reduce everyone's risk?
| |
We need to bring HIV to the forefront of people's minds, where it belongs. |
| |
We need to continue to develop and deliver the education and increase testing. |
| |
We need to continue the fundraising efforts to supplement funding for agencies caring for HIV patients because as the HIV cases increase funding is dwindling.
